Voice AI platforms compared, for UK businesses

For a UK business the choice comes down to five checks: whether you can keep your number, whether the voice sounds British (and Welsh where you need it), how marketing calls sit with PECR and the Telephone Preference Service, how recording is told to callers, and what currency you are billed in. This page puts ThinnestAI beside three developer platforms on those checks, with the sources and the date we read them.

What to check

Five things to check before you choose, in United Kingdom.

A number you can keepMany UK firms gave their customers the same number years ago, and it often sits with another phone provider rather than with the carrier you would use for an agent.Connect the number if it lives on a Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo account you hold; otherwise port it to one of those, or forward calls to a number you hold there. We don't sell UK numbers. Telnyx calls the US and Canada by default, so add the UK before calling out, and an imported Twilio number can't transfer to a person or detect voicemail. Can the agent answer the number my customers already ring, and can I port it away if I leave?
A British voice, and WelshA caller in Leeds or Edinburgh notices an American voice at once, and in Wales some callers are more at ease in Welsh.British English is in the voice library, which also carries Scottish, Irish and Welsh accents; filter by accent, gender and age and listen first. Welsh is also one of the 50 voice languages, but WhatsApp and web chat replies are not available in Welsh, so chat in Wales runs in English.Which British and Welsh voices do you have, and in which languages can the chat reply?
Marketing calls: PECR and the TPSThe ICO says you must not make marketing calls to numbers on the TPS or CTPS unless the person has specifically consented, that an automated marketing call needs specific consent which general marketing consent does not cover, and that you must always say who is calling (read 25 October 2026). We found no statutory calling-hours rule in its guidance. You set calling hours per campaign and keep your own do-not-contact list. The agent does not screen numbers against the TPS or CTPS and holds no consent record. The opening line is yours to write, so it can say who is calling and why.Who screens my list against the TPS before a campaign runs, and where is the consent for each call kept?
Recording and UK GDPRUK GDPR applies to call lists, recordings and transcripts, and callers expect to be told when a call is recorded.Recording is a per-agent switch that stays off until you turn it on, and the opening line can say the call is recorded. Your own UK GDPR duties to your callers stay with you. The privacy policy sets out how calls are processed, and we support region deployments for enterprise customers. Is recording off by default, and what do you put in writing about how my callers' data is handled?
WhatsApp and billingPhone and WhatsApp are both normal for UK enquiries, and property portals send leads by phone, email and message. One agent answers the phone, WhatsApp, website chat and Telegram, with one memory of each customer. Billing is in US dollars by card, with no pound billing. Checkout runs through a merchant of record that handles VAT, and your bank converts the charge.Do you bill in pounds, and who handles VAT on the charge?

Other options

Other kinds of supplier in United Kingdom.

Kinds of supplier, not companies. Each is the right call for someone.

A virtual receptionist or call-handling firm

Trained staff answer in your company name, take a message or put a call through to you. It is the better call when a caller needs a person from the first word, such as a worried patient. It does not answer every line at once or ring a list of leads back.

A cloud phone system

A hosted phone system gives you ring groups, an out-of-hours menu and voicemail sent to your inbox, and it keeps the number you already have. It routes calls where you point it. It does not understand a question or put a job in your diary.

Building on a developer platform

If you have engineers, you can assemble speech, language-model, voice and telephony providers yourself. That gives full control over the stack and costs build time; testing, the inbox and each supplier invoice become your job.

Plainly

Who should pick what.

ThinnestAI fits when

  • You want a British-accent voice, with Welsh on calls where your callers need it, on a number you already hold.
  • You are a trade, salon, estate agent or clinic whose phone rings while you are with a customer, and you want bookings in your diary through Cal.com.
  • You want the same agent on WhatsApp, with templates and a shared inbox where your team can take over, all inside the platform.

Something else fits better when

  • Your customers want WhatsApp or web chat replies in Welsh. Chat replies are not available in Welsh, so use staff or a supplier that offers it.
  • Your plan is cold marketing calls to UK consumers. We do not screen against the TPS or collect consent, so use a supplier that does and ask your solicitor.
  • The call is clinical, veterinary or about safety. The agent cannot advise beyond the wording you give it and is not an emergency service.

Questions

Common questions.

Can I keep my existing UK number?

+
Yes, if the number lives on a Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo account you hold: connect the account and the agent answers it. If it is with another provider, port it to one of those or forward calls to a number you hold there. We don't sell UK numbers. Transfer to a person and voicemail detection work on Plivo and Telnyx numbers, not on an imported Twilio number.

Do the other platforms sell UK numbers?

+
From their own documentation, read on 25 October 2026: Retell sells numbers in the US and Canada only, Bland sells for the US and Canada and says to contact support elsewhere, and Vapi's free numbers use US area codes. For a UK number you would import one from a carrier, as you do with us.

Does the agent screen calls against the TPS?

+
No. It does not screen numbers against the TPS or CTPS or collect consent, so do that before any marketing call. Answering your own inbound calls is a different matter from cold calling, and most UK businesses start there. The UK page has the rules we read.

Do you bill in pounds?

+
No. International workspaces, the UK included, are billed in US dollars by card. A merchant of record handles VAT, and your bank converts the charge. The pricing page has the plans.

Test it on your own calls in United Kingdom.

Create an agent, give it your own information, and ring it from your browser before you connect a number. Then put the same test to the others.
