AI call answering
What does an AI phone agent do for a business in Canada?
It answers the calls you would otherwise miss while you are on a roof, in a treatment room or with another client, and deals with them the way a good receptionist would: a booking, a message, or a transfer to you. Callers can speak English or French, and the same agent answers on WhatsApp and web chat.
Canada is a country of small businesses spread over long distances and several time zones, from the Pacific coast to Newfoundland. A trades company, a clinic or a law office rarely has someone free to pick up. An agent that answers at 07:05 in Alberta and at 21:00 in Halifax stops the enquiry going to the next name on the list.
- Bookings go into your calendar through Cal.com, or into your own system through its API.
- Questions about prices, service areas, opening hours and directions are answered from your website and documents.
- Every call has a transcript and an outcome. More on how it works on the AI receptionist page.
Voices
Is there a Canadian accent, and can the agent speak French?
Yes to both. Voice agents speak English with a Canadian accent (the library also has American, British and others) and French. You choose each voice from a searchable library and listen before you pick. Replies on WhatsApp and website chat run in 37 languages, and English and French are both among them.
To be straight about the limits: we claim French, the language, and not a Canadian-French or Quebec accent of it. We have not published how each voice sounds for a Quebec ear, so have a native speaker from your region try it before you connect your number. Voice agents also speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, Tamil, Spanish and many more of the languages heard in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Punjabi is not among our voice languages (it is one of the 37 chat and WhatsApp languages), so do not plan a Punjabi phone line.
A business in Quebec has more to think about than language: read our guide to French-language service and Law 25 for AI phone agents.
WhatsApp and chat
Does it work on WhatsApp for customers in Canada?
Yes. The same agent answers on WhatsApp, website chat and the phone, with a shared inbox where your team can take over and approved templates for reminders and confirmations.
WhatsApp is far from the only channel in Canada: plenty of customers prefer text messages, web chat or the phone, and we found no reliable national figure for WhatsApp use. Marketing messages sent electronically fall under Canada's anti-spam law, CASL, which needs consent (more below). See the WhatsApp Business API and the WhatsApp AI agent.
Your number
Can I keep my existing Canadian number?
Yes, if the number lives on a Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo account you hold: connect the account and the agent answers that number. We don't sell Canadian numbers.
- Number with a Canadian carrier? Port it to one of those accounts, or forward your calls to a number you hold there.
- Transfer to a person and voicemail detection work on Plivo and Telnyx numbers. An imported Twilio number answers and records, but can't transfer or detect voicemail.
- Telnyx calls only the countries switched on in your outbound voice profile, which are the US and Canada by default.

Outbound calls
What are the rules for AI sales calls in Canada?
You are responsible for following them. The CRTC's Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules cover the National Do Not Call List (DNCL), telemarketing conduct and automatic dialing-announcing devices (ADAD), and Canada's anti-spam law, CASL, covers commercial text and instant messages. Check both before any outbound campaign.
What the official sources say, as read on 25 October 2026: telemarketers, and the organisations on whose behalf they call, must register with the National DNCL, even if their calls are exempt. Exemptions include registered charities, political parties, surveys and newspapers, plus consumers with an existing business relationship (a purchase or lease in the last 18 months, a contract in force or ended in the last 18 months, or an inquiry or application in the last six months) and anyone who has given express consent; calls to businesses are outside the DNCL rules (National DNCL website). CRTC enforcement notices cite the calling hours as 9:00 to 21:30 on weekdays and 10:00 to 18:00 on weekends, on the clock of the person called; provincial rules can differ. The ADAD rules reach beyond telemarketing, to calls such as appointment reminders, and the CRTC's rules permit telemarketing by ADAD only with express consent (reported in a search of CRTC material; we could not open the CRTC's own page). We could not verify how an AI voice agent is classified, so plan on the stricter view.
CASL prohibits sending a commercial electronic message to an electronic address (email, instant messaging account, telephone account or similar) without express or implied consent, with sender identification and an unsubscribe mechanism (section 6 of the Act). The maximum penalty per violation is 1 million dollars for an individual and 10 million dollars for anyone else (section 20(4)). Read our guide to the DNCL and CASL for AI outbound calls.
The product gives you tools: a do-not-contact list you keep, calling hours you set for each campaign on the called person's clock, an opening line you write, and a transcript of every call. It does not screen numbers against the National DNCL, and it does not collect or check consent. Answering your own inbound calls is a different matter from cold calling, and most businesses start there. Read the official text; not legal advice.
Data
Where is my data stored, and what about PIPEDA and Quebec?
Each workspace keeps its data in the region it is set up in. We support region deployments for enterprise customers.
Calls are processed partly in other countries, with speech recognition in the EU and the voice and the language model in the US, under transfer safeguards. The federal privacy law, PIPEDA, applies to private-sector organisations that collect, use or disclose personal information in the course of commercial activity, and it keeps applying to personal information that crosses borders, even where Alberta, British Columbia or Quebec have their own similar private-sector laws (Office of the Privacy Commissioner, read 25 October 2026). Quebec's law is stricter on transfers out of the province; see the Quebec guide above. What your own situation needs is a question for your adviser. The privacy policy sets out the detail.
You remain responsible for telling callers how their data is used, including that a call is recorded if you switch recording on (it is off by default). The agent's opening line is yours to write, so it can say so at the start of every call. Under section 184 of the Criminal Code, intercepting a private communication is an offence unless there is consent, express or implied; telling the caller at the start is the safe course. Read the official text; not legal advice.
Agencies
Can a Canadian agency resell it under its own brand?
Yes. White label comes with every paid plan: your brand, your domain, your email sender, your sign-in page and your own prices.
Your clients pay you through your own card checkout, buy your plans and set up automatic top-up. You build their receptionists; they see only your brand. See white label for agencies.
Billing
Do you bill in Canadian dollars?
No. International workspaces, Canada included, are billed in US dollars by card. Checkout runs through a merchant of record that handles sales tax and VAT, and your bank converts the charge. Prices are on the pricing page.
