Can an AI Receptionist Answer for a Canadian Small Business in English and French?
Short answer: yes. A voice agent can answer your calls in English with a Canadian accent, or in French, at any hour, on the number you already use, and the same agent can reply on WhatsApp and website chat. It books, takes messages and passes urgent calls to you. It suits trades, clinics, law and accounting offices and anyone whose phone rings while they are with a customer. It is a poor fit if every call needs a person's judgement, and a business in Quebec has extra points to check.
Who in Canada loses calls?
Almost any business that is small and on its feet: a roofer in Calgary on a ladder when the hail-damage call comes in, a physiotherapist in Vancouver with a patient on the table, a plumber in Halifax at the end of a night shift, a sole-practitioner lawyer in Ottawa in a meeting. Canada also spans many time zones, so a call to a Vancouver office at what feels like early morning in Toronto still deserves an answer. A missed call usually means the caller rings the next business on the list.
What does the agent do on the call?
- Answers in English or French. The voice library has an English voice with a Canadian accent, as well as American, British and others, and French voices. You listen before you pick.
- Books and moves appointments in your calendar through Cal.com, or in your own system through its API.
- Answers questions from your material: service area, opening hours, what a visit involves. It reads your website, files and pasted text.
- Triages by urgency. For a burst pipe or storm damage, it asks for the address and whether water is coming in, then rings your on-call person or schedules a callback. You write the rules.
- Takes a message and keeps a transcript.
- Hands over to a person when you tell it to (transfer works on Plivo and Telnyx numbers, not on an imported Twilio number).
The same agent answers on WhatsApp and website chat, with one memory of the customer across channels. See the AI receptionist page.
How good is the French?
Voice agents speak French, and chat and WhatsApp replies cover French among 37 languages. We claim the language and not a Canadian-French or Quebec accent of it. We have not published how each voice sounds to a listener in Montréal or Moncton, so have a native speaker from your region ring the agent from the browser before you connect your number. For Quebec, read French-language service and Law 25 for AI phone agents.
Can I keep my Canadian number?
Yes, if the number sits on a Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo account you hold, or you can port it or forward calls to one. We do not sell Canadian numbers, and international workspaces cannot rent one from us. The simplest start is forwarding your out-of-hours calls to a number on one of those accounts. Telnyx lets outbound calls go only to the countries switched on in your outbound voice profile, and the US and Canada are on by default.
What about data and recording?
We support region deployments for enterprise customers. Calls are also processed partly in other countries, under transfer safeguards. Under the federal privacy law PIPEDA, private-sector organisations are responsible for personal information in commercial activity, and Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec have their own similar laws (Privacy Commissioner's site, read 25 October 2026). Recording is off by default, and the opening line is yours to write, so it can tell callers that a call is recorded. Ask your adviser what your province needs. This is not legal advice.
What are the limits?
- The agent follows the instructions and material you give it. If your knowledge base is thin, its answers will be too.
- Callers with a strong accent or poor reception can still be misheard. Read the transcripts in the first weeks.
- Billing is in US dollars by card, not Canadian dollars. See pricing.
- Punjabi is not a voice language here (it is one of the 37 chat languages). Mandarin and Cantonese are voice languages.
- It does not replace a person for legal, clinical or tax advice. Tell the agent which calls go to you.
How do I start?
- List the ten reasons people ring, in order of how often they happen.
- Load your website, service list and price rules into the knowledge base.
- Pick a Canadian English voice and, if you serve French speakers, a French voice, and ring the agent from your browser.
- Forward out-of-hours calls to it first, then widen to busy periods.
The Canada page gathers the languages, numbers and data details. If you plan outbound campaigns, read Canada's rules for AI outbound calls first.
