Can an AI Receptionist Serve English-Speaking Customers in France?
Short answer: yes. A voice agent can answer your calls in French, and in English in a British, American, Irish or other accent, at any hour, on the number you already use. It books, takes messages and passes urgent calls to you. It is a good fit for a business in France whose phone rings with callers who do not speak French as a first language: holiday-let hosts, wine estates, estate agents, restaurants and clinics. It is a poor fit if you need a person to judge every enquiry.
Who in France gets calls in English?
More businesses than the Riviera. A gite owner in the Dordogne is rung by British and Dutch guests asking how to find the key. A wine estate near Bordeaux takes bookings from visitors from the United States. An estate agent in Provence talks to buyers in London before they cross the Channel. A restaurant in Lyon is rung by business travellers who could not get through to the front desk. A missed call or a voicemail in French usually sends the caller to the next name on the list.
What does the agent do on the call?
- Answers in the caller's language. Voice agents speak French and English (American, British, Australian, Indian and other accents), and German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Arabic among others, from a voice library you can filter and listen to.
- Books and moves appointments in your calendar through Cal.com, or in your own system through its API.
- Answers questions from your material: opening hours, tasting times, check-in rules, prices you have written, directions. It reads your website, files and pasted text.
- Takes a message with the details you need, and keeps a transcript you can read.
- Hands over to a person when you tell it to, for example for a complaint or an emergency (transfer works on Plivo and Telnyx numbers, not on an imported Twilio number).
The same agent can answer on WhatsApp and website chat, with replies in 37 languages including French, English, German, Spanish and Italian. Dutch and Arabic are voice only. See the AI receptionist page for the full picture.
Can I keep my French number?
Yes, if the number sits on a Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo account you hold, or you can port it or forward calls to one. We do not sell French numbers, and international workspaces cannot rent one from us. If your number is with a French operator, the simplest start is call forwarding to a number on one of those accounts, so you can test before you move anything.
Where is the data, and what about the RGPD?
We support region deployments for enterprise customers. Calls are also processed partly in other countries: speech recognition in the EU, the voice and the language model in the US, under transfer safeguards. You remain responsible for your own duties as the business that talks to the customer, such as telling callers how their data is used and, if you switch recording on, that the call is recorded. Recording is off by default, and the opening line is yours to write. The supervisory authority is the CNIL. Ask your data-protection adviser what your own situation requires. This is not legal advice.
What are the limits?
- The agent follows the instructions and material you give it. If your knowledge base is thin, its answers will be too.
- We claim French, not a regional variety of it, so no promise about a Canadian or Belgian accent, nor about Breton, Corsican or Occitan.
- Callers with a strong regional accent or poor reception can still be misheard. Read the transcripts in the first weeks and fix what you find.
- Billing is in US dollars by card, not euros. See pricing.
- It does not replace a person for complaints, negotiation or anything clinical or legal.
A person-answered service may suit you better if most of your calls need judgement or a warm voice that knows your regulars by name.
How do I start?
- List the ten reasons people ring, in the order of how often they happen.
- Load your website, price list and house rules into the knowledge base, in French and English.
- Pick a French voice and an English voice, and ring the agent from your browser.
- Forward your out-of-hours calls to it first, then widen to busy periods.
