How Can an AI Voice Agent Hand a Call Over to a Human Agent?

Short answer: you tell the agent when to hand over — when the caller asks for a person, when it can't find the answer, or when the caller is upset — and give it a number your team answers. When it happens, the agent tells the caller it is putting them through and transfers the live call. Transfer works on ThinnestAI, Plivo and Telnyx numbers, not on imported Twilio numbers. On WhatsApp, website chat and Telegram, the conversation moves to a shared inbox instead, where a teammate takes over and the agent stops replying.

Why the hand-over matters as much as the agent

An agent that can answer most questions is useful; one that traps a customer who needs a person is a complaint waiting to happen. The hand-over is what makes it safe to put an agent on your main number: the routine calls are answered, and the disputes, distress and unusual cases still reach someone who can decide.

How a phone hand-over works, step by step

  1. Choose the triggers. In the agent's hand-over settings, switch on the cases that should reach a person — the customer asks for one, or the agent can't answer from what it has been given.
  2. Give it a number to transfer to. A desk phone, a team line or a supervisor's mobile. The number is fixed in the settings; a caller can't talk the agent into dialling somewhere else.
  3. The agent hands over. It tells the caller, in their language, that it is connecting them, and transfers the call.
  4. Your team is told. The escalation shows in the console notifications and can be sent to your own systems as a signed webhook.
  5. The record stays complete. The call's transcript and outcome are in the call log, so whoever picks up the follow-up can see what the customer already said.

Which numbers can transfer

  • Transfer works on numbers bought from ThinnestAI and on imported Plivo and Telnyx numbers.
  • Imported Twilio numbers can't transfer a call. If hand-over to a person on the phone matters, put that agent on a ThinnestAI, Plivo or Telnyx number.
  • Billing: a transferred call on an imported number is billed only up to the transfer. See pricing for the rates.

Hand-over on WhatsApp, chat and Telegram

On messaging channels the same triggers send the conversation to the shared inbox. A teammate takes it over and the agent goes silent, so the customer never gets two answers at once. The inbox has conversation assignment, saved replies and internal notes the customer never sees — and when the person is done, the conversation can be handed back to the agent.

What you need to start

An agent on a ThinnestAI, Plivo or Telnyx number, a number your team answers during the hours calls come in, and a short rule in the agent's instructions for what it should always pass on. See voice AI agent for inbound calling and the call center page for how support teams split the work.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI voice agent transfer a call to a real person?

Yes. When a hand-over trigger is met, the agent tells the caller it is connecting them and transfers the live call to the number you set.

Does call transfer work on every number?

+
Transfer works on ThinnestAI numbers and on imported Plivo and Telnyx numbers. It does not work on imported Twilio numbers.

How is a transferred call billed?

A transferred call on an imported number is billed only up to the transfer. Current rates are on the pricing page.

What happens on WhatsApp when a person takes over?

+
The conversation moves to the shared inbox, a teammate replies, and the agent stops replying until the conversation is handed back.

Can a caller make the agent transfer them to any number?
