Best Smith.ai Alternatives for Small Businesses

Short answer: start by deciding who should answer: people, AI, or both. For people, Ruby and PATLive are established live-receptionist services; for a mix with a dedicated team, Abby Connect; for an AI receptionist built for small businesses, Rosie, Upfirst or Goodcall; if you are already on RingCentral, its AI Receptionist. ThinnestAI fits when you want an AI agent that answers WhatsApp and website chat as well as the phone, in many languages, but it has no human receptionists.

We checked every company on its own website on 24 October 2026.

What is Smith.ai, and why look elsewhere?

Smith.ai sells three ways to answer: "100% AI", "Hybrid" and "100% Human", with a North American live-agent team. Its homepage is now written mainly for law firms, with practice-area intake, consultation booking, fee collection and integrations with legal software such as Clio and MyCase. It answers in English and Spanish and bills per call rather than per minute (from its website, read 24 October 2026).

Small businesses outside law look elsewhere for three reasons: they want a service written for their trade, they want a simpler all-AI tool, or they need languages and channels beyond English and Spanish on the phone.

People, AI or hybrid: which do you need?

  • All human suits calls that need judgement and warmth: upset customers, complex intake, high-value clients.
  • All AI suits frequent, predictable calls: hours, prices, bookings, messages, after-hours cover.
  • Hybrid lets AI take the routine calls and passes the rest to a person.

The alternatives

1. Ruby: best for live, personal answering

  • Who it suits: small firms whose callers expect a person.
  • What it does well: "a trained receptionist—not a bot—answers", 24/7 including weekends and holidays, English and Spanish, managed website chat and a mobile app.
  • Limitation: its FAQ says extras such as bilingual answering and scheduling may cost more.
  • Source: ruby.com, read 24 October 2026.

2. PATLive: best all-human service to trial

  • Who it suits: businesses that want people on every call and to test before committing.
  • What it does well: "100% human answering" by US-based receptionists, Spanish-language support, scheduling in your existing software, order taking and payments, and a "14-day free trial, no contracts".
  • Limitation: no AI option is described, so very high call volumes scale with people.
  • Source: patlive.com, read 24 October 2026.

3. Abby Connect: best hybrid with a dedicated team

  • Who it suits: businesses that want to choose, call by call, between people and AI.
  • What it does well: a dedicated team of 10 to 20 receptionists in Las Vegas, an AI receptionist that hands to a person when needed, and scheduling included in every plan.
  • Limitation: plan prices are on a separate page, and human minutes cost twice the AI minutes in its own units.
  • Source: abby.com, read 24 October 2026.

4. Rosie: best simple AI receptionist

  • Who it suits: solo owners and trades who miss calls on the job.
  • What it does well: trains from your website or Google Business Profile, answers in English and Spanish, filters spam, texts booking links, and includes website chat on all plans, with a 7-day free trial.
  • Limitation: direct calendar booking and transfers start on its Scale plan.
  • Source: heyrosie.com, read 24 October 2026.

5. Upfirst: best for callers in many languages

  • Who it suits: law firms, contractors and property managers with mixed-language callers.
  • What it does well: English, Spanish and "35+ other languages", warm transfers, and booking into Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Acuity, Square or Clio.
  • Limitation: plans are counted in calls, so check the cost if your call count is high.
  • Source: upfirst.ai, read 24 October 2026.

6. Goodcall: best if you want it set up for you

  • Who it suits: owners who would rather describe their business than configure software.
  • What it does well: its builder agent writes the agent from your website, it books from your calendar, texts and emails lead details, and pricing is not per minute.
  • Limitation: languages are not stated on its homepage.
  • Source: goodcall.com, read 24 October 2026.

7. RingCentral AI Receptionist: best if you use RingCentral

  • Who it suits: businesses already on RingCentral, or on a phone system that can forward calls or connect over SIP.
  • What it does well: answers from your website and documents, books through Google or Outlook calendars, and speaks English, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Portuguese.
  • Limitation: it is a standalone or add-on licence in the US and Canada, but add-on only in the UK, Australia and the EU.
  • Source: ringcentral.com, read 24 October 2026.

8. ThinnestAI: best for phone plus WhatsApp

  • Who it suits: small businesses in the US, UK, UAE and India whose customers call and message.
  • What it does well: one AI agent on your phone number, WhatsApp, website chat and Telegram, voice in 50 languages (including Arabic and British and American English), bookings through Google Calendar via Cal.com, and handover to your team.
  • Limitation: AI only, with no live receptionists; outside India you import your own Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo number, and transfer to a person works on Plivo and Telnyx numbers but not on imported Twilio ones.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Smith.ai only for law firms?

+
Its homepage, read 24 October 2026, is written mainly for law firms, but it also lists industries such as home services, IT and marketing agencies.

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than a human answering service?

+
Usually, because AI is billed by minute, call or customer rather than by staff time; Abby Connect, for example, counts an AI minute as half a human minute. Compare each pricing page against your real call volume.

Which alternative answers in Spanish?

+
Ruby, PATLive, Rosie and Upfirst list Spanish on their websites, and RingCentral’s AI Receptionist lists it among six languages. ThinnestAI voice agents speak 50 languages including Spanish.

Can an AI receptionist hand a call to me?

+
Most can. Rosie and Upfirst describe warm transfers, and ThinnestAI transfers live calls on Plivo and Telnyx numbers. Check that transfer works on the number you plan to use.

Do I need a new phone number?

+
Usually not. Most services work by forwarding your existing number. With ThinnestAI outside India, you import your own Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo number.
