How Do You Collect Delivery Addresses Inside WhatsApp?
Short answer: send the customer a WhatsApp form — what Meta calls a Flow. It opens as a native form inside the chat with a box for each part of the address; the customer fills it in and taps submit without leaving WhatsApp. The answers come back into the conversation, where the agent reads them, confirms the address, and your team can see it. You build the form once in the console, and the agent sends it whenever it needs an address.
Why asking for an address in chat goes wrong
Typed into a chat, an address arrives in pieces: the flat number in one message, the area in another, the landmark forgotten, the pincode missing. An agent asking for each part in turn takes six exchanges, and a customer who replies with a question halfway through leaves you with half an address. A form asks for everything at once, in fixed boxes, and comes back complete.
How it works, step by step
- Build the form. In the console, add up to eight questions — for an address: full name, flat or house number, street and area, landmark, city, pincode and an alternate phone number. Each question can be text, a longer paragraph, a number, a phone number, an email, a date or a choice, marked required or optional, with a hint underneath.
- Preview and publish it. Check it as the customer will see it, then publish. Meta publishes forms only for a business it has verified, so if verification is still pending you can build and preview now and publish the day it completes.
- Let the agent send it. Switch on the agent's form tool (it starts off). When the agent needs several details at once — an address, a booking, a complaint with specifics — it sends the form that fits instead of asking question by question. Your team can also send it from the shared inbox.
- The customer fills it in. The form opens inside WhatsApp, with no website to load and nothing to sign in to.
- The answers come back. They arrive in the conversation as the customer's reply. The agent confirms the address back, and if your order system has an API, it can write the address there through tool calling.
- It is remembered. With the agent's past-replies tool on, the agent can see what this customer submitted before — useful when they come back to change an address.
What a form like this cannot do
The forms are static: every screen is defined in advance, and nothing is looked up while the customer fills it in. That means a form cannot fill in the customer's saved address from your system, check a pincode against the areas you deliver to before they submit, or show options that depend on your live data. The practical answer is to let the agent do that work after submission: it can check the pincode against your system through tool calling and ask the customer to correct it if you don't deliver there.
Rules worth knowing
- The 24-hour window. A form is an interactive message, and WhatsApp only carries one inside a conversation the customer has opened in the last 24 hours. If they haven't written to you recently, start with an approved template — "Please confirm your delivery address" — and send the form when they reply.
- Ask only what you need. An address is personal data. Keep the form to the fields delivery actually needs; customer data is stored in India (Mumbai).
- Keep it short. The eight-question limit is deliberate — a long form on a phone gets abandoned rather than answered.
Where it fits
Addresses for cash-on-delivery orders before they ship, pickup addresses for returns, site addresses for a service visit, or the delivery point for a logistics consignment. For orders where a call works better — confirming a COD order, say — the same agent can call the buyer instead; see how to reduce failed COD deliveries with AI calls.
What you need to start
A WhatsApp Business number connected through Meta, a verified Meta business to publish forms, and the fields you need. See WhatsApp forms for more form types, the WhatsApp AI agent for the conversation around it, and the e-commerce and logistics pages for full flows.
