How to Get the WhatsApp Business API in India — A Practical Walkthrough

The API itself is not the hard part. The parts that stall people are a phone number that is not actually free, and a Business Manager account nobody can find the login for.

What to have ready before you start

  • A phone number that is not signed in to WhatsApp anywhere. Not the consumer app, not the WhatsApp Business app. This is the single most common blocker. A number can only exist in one place at a time, so if it is currently in use you will need to delete that account first — which deletes its chat history. Decide that before you begin, not halfway through.
  • A Facebook Business Manager account, or someone in the business who can sign in to one.
  • Your legal business name as it appears on registration documents, because it has to match.
  • A display name for what customers will see. Meta reviews this, and names that are unrelated to your business get rejected.

If you would rather keep using the free WhatsApp Business app on that number, use a different number for the API. Being able to run both on one number is a real Meta feature, but treat it as a separate question rather than assuming your platform supports it.

The signup itself

Access used to mean emailing a provider and waiting. It no longer does. Providers approved by Meta as Tech Providers can run Embedded Signup: you sign in with Facebook inside a Meta window, pick or add your number, verify it by SMS or call, and the account is created.

We are an approved Tech Provider, so that flow is self-serve — sign in, choose the number, and it goes live. Templates and the API switch on with it.

Two honest caveats. Meta occasionally asks for business verification documents depending on your account, and that review is Meta's, on Meta's timetable. And self-serve means nobody has to approve you manually — it does not mean nothing can ever go to review.

Templates: the bit people underestimate

Once you have access, you cannot simply message anyone. To start a conversation with someone who has not messaged you in the last 24 hours, you need an approved template. Templates are reviewed by Meta, usually quickly.

What gets rejected, reliably:

  • Anything that reads as unsolicited marketing to a person who did not ask
  • Placeholder variables at the very start or end of a message
  • Vague content where the variables could mean anything
  • Templates in the wrong category — marketing content submitted as utility

Write the message you would actually want to receive, be specific, and put your variables in the middle of a sentence. Twenty-six templates come pre-written on our side, buttons included, which is mostly a shortcut past learning these rules the slow way.

The green tick

The green tick — the official business badge — is a separate Meta review with its own timetable. It is not required. Your number works without it, templates work without it, broadcasts work without it. Nobody can promise you when it arrives, and you should be wary of anyone who does.

What to do in the first week

  1. Import contacts with their consent route recorded — where each person agreed, not just their number.
  2. Send one small broadcast to your most engaged segment. Your number starts on a low messaging tier, and Meta raises it as you send without being reported.
  3. Watch the quality rating, not just the send count.
  4. Answer quickly. Replies to people who messaged you first are not capped by your tier, and service conversations are the cheapest kind on Meta's own pricing.

The WhatsApp Business API page covers what you get once you are connected, and why numbers get restricted is worth reading before your first campaign rather than after it.
