How Can NBFCs Record a Borrower's Promise to Pay Automatically?

Short answer: let the AI voice agent that makes the collection call capture the promise itself. When the borrower agrees to pay, the agent asks for a specific date and amount, reads them back, and writes them to your LMS or CRM — during the call through tool calling, or straight after it on a signed webhook with the transcript. Nobody types up notes, and the promise is in your system before the next call starts.

Why promises get lost

A promise to pay is only useful if it is recorded exactly and followed up on the right day. On a busy collections floor, "kal kar dunga" ends up as a free-text note, a vague date, or nothing at all. Without a clean date and amount, the follow-up call either comes too early and annoys the borrower, or too late to matter.

How it works, step by step

  1. Load the accounts. Upload the borrowers to call — name, phone, language, loan reference, amount overdue — or have your LMS place each call through the outbound call API. Each value is filled into the call.
  2. The agent makes the call. It says which lender is calling and why, confirms it is speaking to the borrower, and explains the overdue amount — in the borrower's own language.
  3. It turns "soon" into a date. When the borrower says they will pay, the agent asks when and how much. "Salary ke baad" becomes a specific day; a part payment becomes a specific amount.
  4. It reads the promise back. "So that's the full EMI on the 12th — is that right?" The borrower confirms or corrects it on the call.
  5. The promise is written to your system. Through tool calling, the agent calls an action you connect — your LMS or CRM's API — with the loan reference, date and amount while the call is still going. Or, after the call, a signed webhook delivers the outcome, the transcript, a summary and the fields you asked for, such as the promised date and amount.
  6. Your system follows up. Your LMS knows whether the money arrived. If it didn't by the promised date, it places the follow-up call through the API — and the agent can send the payment details as an approved WhatsApp template.

When there is no promise

  • Call me later: "call me after six" becomes a scheduled callback inside your calling hours.
  • A dispute or distress: a borrower who disputes the amount, or is in difficulty, can be transferred to a person on your team.
  • Wrong person: instruct the agent not to discuss the loan with anyone but the borrower, and to record a wrong number as the outcome.
  • No answer: a busy line is retried in minutes and an unanswered one after an hour or more; someone who declined, or a dead number, is never re-dialled.

The rules to keep

  • RBI's Fair Practices Code limits recovery calls to between 8am and 7pm. Outbound calls on the platform are already time-boxed to 9am–9pm IST — set your campaign window inside both.
  • Keep a do-not-contact list; anyone on it is never called again.
  • Write the greeting so the borrower knows who is calling and why. The agent does not announce itself automatically; that is up to the script you write.
  • Every call has a transcript and an outcome. Audio recording is a per-agent switch you turn on.

What you need to start

A phone number, the list of accounts, and an API endpoint or webhook receiver in your LMS. See the NBFC collections and debt collections pages for full call flows, and tool calling for how the agent writes to your systems.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an AI agent capture a promise to pay?

+
It asks the borrower for a specific date and amount, reads them back to confirm, and writes them to your LMS or CRM — during the call through tool calling, or after it on a signed webhook.

What does the webhook after the call contain?

+
The outcome, the transcript, a summary and the fields you ask for — for example the promised date and amount. Webhooks are signed so your system can check they came from us.

What hours can collection calls be made?

+
RBI's Fair Practices Code limits recovery calls to between 8am and 7pm, and outbound calls on the platform are limited to 9am–9pm IST — set your campaign window inside both.

Who follows up if the borrower does not pay on the promised date?

+
Your LMS, which knows whether the payment arrived. It can place the follow-up call through the outbound call API.

Can a borrower speak to a person?

+
Yes. A borrower who disputes the amount, is in distress or asks for a person can be transferred to your team.
