Twilio
Twilio WhatsApp API Alternatives for Small Businesses
Short answer: Twilio is an API for developers, so a small business without one usually needs a platform that already has the inbox, templates and broadcasts built. Wati, AiSensy and Superchat are the simplest starts, Esendex suits UK businesses that want a dashboard or an API, and 360dialog suits a business with a developer that wants no markup on Meta's fees. If you want an AI agent that answers WhatsApp and your phone line, ThinnestAI does both, and can use the Twilio number you already have for calls.
Why is Twilio hard for a small business?
Twilio's WhatsApp page (read 24 October 2026) describes Programmable Messaging and Conversations APIs, a Voice API for WhatsApp Business Calling and a Senders API, with code samples in many languages. That is the right tool if you are writing software. If you are a clinic, a shop or a letting agent, you also need:
- a screen where your team reads and answers chats;
- a way to write, submit and track message templates;
- broadcasts to opted-in customers, with replies landing back in the inbox;
- an assistant or chatbot for the questions you get every day.
On Twilio you build those or connect another product. Its pricing page also lists "Twilio's message handling fee: $0.005 per message", inbound or outbound, on top of Meta's charges, which it passes through.

Which alternative suits which small business?
Wati: the all-rounder
Wati shows an Official Meta Business Partner badge, a team inbox across WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok and web chat, no-code chatbots, Astra AI agents and a 7-day trial. Its blog describes Coexistence, so you can keep using the WhatsApp Business App on the same number, subject to Meta's eligibility rules.
AiSensy: the lowest-cost start
AiSensy advertises "a FREE forever plan" and a 14-day trial, multi-agent live chat on one number, broadcasts and click-to-WhatsApp ads. Its pricing page has a link to dollar pricing for international customers.
Superchat: several channels for a small team
Superchat lists a free plan and paid plans at €89, €149 and €299 a month, covering WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram, live chat, email and SMS, with AI agents from Professional. Paid plans have a 12-month minimum term.
Esendex: a UK option with a dashboard or API
Esendex, registered in Nottingham, offers WhatsApp through an online platform or its API, plus chatbots, with "pricing based on usage". It suits UK firms that also send SMS and want one supplier.
Gallabox and respond.io: when you need flows or many channels
Gallabox has a flow builder, drip sequences and AI agents on WhatsApp and Instagram from its Essential plan, priced in rupees, dollars and dirhams. respond.io adds Instagram, Messenger, TikTok and email in one thread, priced in US dollars, with WhatsApp fees topped up separately.
360dialog: if you do have a developer
360dialog keeps the API approach but says there are "no markups on Meta fees", charging a monthly fee per number instead, so it is a like-for-like swap for a business that wants to keep building.
ThinnestAI: an AI agent instead of an inbox you staff all day
ThinnestAI is an official Meta Tech Provider: you connect your number through Meta's own signup, from any country, without code. An AI agent answers WhatsApp from your own knowledge base, books into your calendar through Cal.com, collects details with WhatsApp forms, and passes the chat to your shared inbox when a person is needed. Broadcasts go only to customers with a recorded opt-in.
If you already use Twilio for phone calls, you can keep that number: import it from your own Twilio account, and the same agent answers calls to it with one memory of each customer across WhatsApp and the phone. On an imported Twilio number, voicemail detection and live transfer to a person are not available; the agent takes the caller's details instead. ThinnestAI is not the right pick if you want a drag-and-drop flow builder or Instagram and email in the same inbox.
What will WhatsApp cost on any of these?
Two parts. Meta's charges, per delivered message, by category (marketing, utility, authentication, service) and by the customer's country, published on Meta's pricing page. Then the platform's own subscription or fee. A small business sending mostly replies and a few utility messages will see a very different bill from one sending weekly marketing broadcasts, so estimate from your own mix. ThinnestAI's fees are on pricing.
