How Can a Small US Business Answer Calls After Hours Without Hiring?

Short answer: put an AI voice agent on your business number for evenings, nights and weekends. It answers every call, handles the common questions from your own information, books appointments or takes a detailed message, transfers genuine emergencies to whoever is on call, and schedules callbacks for business hours. In the morning, every call is waiting in your console with a transcript and an outcome.

Why after-hours calls matter

For a dental office, an HVAC company, a law firm or a property manager, plenty of calls come in after closing: people calling on their lunch break across time zones, after work, or with a problem that just started. A voicemail greeting loses many of them, and an answering service or a night shift is a cost many small businesses cannot carry.

How it works, step by step

  1. Connect your number. Import your business number from your own Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo account. It stays with your provider. Many businesses point after-hours calls at the agent using their phone system's forwarding or schedule settings; others let the agent answer every call.
  2. Teach it your business. Your website, services, service area, hours, policies and FAQs go into the knowledge base.
  3. Decide what it should do. Book appointments (Google Calendar through Cal.com, or your own system through its API), take a message with name, number and reason, or record a new lead.
  4. Define an emergency. A burst pipe, no heat, a client in custody: tell the agent which calls should reach a person, and it transfers them to your on-call phone. Transfer works on Telnyx and Plivo numbers; on an imported Twilio number it takes the details for you to call back.
  5. Call people back in the morning. "Call me tomorrow at ten" becomes a scheduled callback. Callbacks go out only inside the calling hours you set, read on the called person's local time — keep them inside 8am–9pm for US numbers — and your workspace starts in your own time zone.
  6. Read the night's calls. Transcripts and outcomes in your console, and a signed webhook can push leads and call summaries into your CRM.

Things to set up carefully

  • The greeting. Say who the caller has reached, and that they are speaking with an automated assistant if you want callers to know. The agent says what you write.
  • Recording. Recording is off by default and is a per-agent switch. Some states require every party's consent before a call is recorded, so check yours before turning it on.
  • Advice. Keep medical, legal and financial advice out of the agent's instructions and route those questions to a person.
  • Outbound calls. Calling people back who asked you to is different from marketing calls. Before running outbound campaigns, read the TCPA before AI calls.

Not just the phone

The same agent answers your website chat and WhatsApp after hours too, with one memory of each customer, so someone who called last night and messages this morning is not asked to start again.

What you need to start

Your number on Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo, your website or a few documents, and a list of what counts as an emergency. The US page covers how the product works for American businesses, the AI receptionist page covers inbound calls in detail, and pricing lists the plans.

Can it reach me for emergencies?

+
Yes, on Telnyx and Plivo numbers it transfers the calls you define as urgent to your on-call phone. On an imported Twilio number it takes the details for you to call back.
