WhatsApp's Marketing Messages API: Better Delivery for Broadcasts, Switched On by Default
WhatsApp has two ways to send a template. The standard Cloud API carries everything — order updates, one-time codes, offers. And there is a separate Marketing Messages API (sometimes called MM Lite) that carries only marketing, and that Meta optimises for delivery.
From today, ThinnestAI sends every marketing template through it automatically: broadcasts, drip sequences, and marketing sent from the console or API.
What it changes
Meta reports that, in India, marketing messages sent through the Marketing Messages API that people engage with saw up to 9% more messages delivered than through the standard API. Meta also uses engagement to decide how many people your marketing can reach — messages that get read earn more reach.
What it doesn't change
- The price. Marketing messages cost the same, and are charged when they're delivered.
- Your templates. The same approved marketing templates go out; nothing is resubmitted.
- WhatsApp's per-person limit. WhatsApp still limits how many marketing messages each person receives from all businesses, and still answers 131049 when someone's at that limit. Better delivery makes better use of the limit; it doesn't remove it.
- Utility and authentication messages. Order updates, tickets and one-time codes stay on the standard route. The Marketing Messages API takes marketing only.
Built so it can only help
A new delivery path should never make a working send fail. So:
- Accounts Meta hasn't onboarded yet are routed through the standard API by Meta itself — there's nothing to check or switch on.
- If the Marketing Messages API refuses a message — for example, a template Meta has re-categorised — it's sent once more the standard way. A refused message was never sent, so it can't arrive twice.
We tested it end to end from a real business's account before switching it on: a marketing template through the Marketing Messages API, a utility template through the standard route, and a mislabelled template that was refused and then delivered the standard way. All three arrived, each exactly once.
Do I need to do anything?
No. If you send marketing broadcasts on ThinnestAI, they already go this way. If some aren't delivered, every failure shows WhatsApp's own reason and what it means — and every WhatsApp error code has its own page.
