Lead qualification · India
How an AI agent qualifies leads in India: three real conversations
An AI agent qualifies a lead by asking the questions you put in its prompt, in the language the person speaks, and recording what it learns. These three examples show it on an inbound call in Hinglish, an outbound follow-up call to someone who asked for one, and a WhatsApp chat that ends without a sale. All three use the India deployment: Indian numbers, rupees and the 22 scheduled languages.
Example 1 · Inbound call
Can the agent qualify a rooftop solar enquiry in Hinglish?
Yes. The caller mixes Hindi and English, and the agent does too. It checks who owns the roof, how much shade there is, the monthly bill and the electricity company, then books the engineer's site visit.
- Name: Sanjay Deshmukh
- Need: Rooftop solar, own bungalow, open roof
- Location: Kothrud, Pune
- Monthly bill: ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 (MSEDCL)
- Timing: Wants to start this month
- Next step: Engineer site visit, Saturday 10:00
Example 2 · Outbound follow-up call
Can the agent call back a web-form lead and find out who actually decides?
Yes. The agent says who is calling and why, offers to stop, then asks about purpose, budget, loan and timing. When it learns that the husband co-decides, it books a callback for when both can be on the line instead of pushing a site visit.
- Name: Meera Rao
- Interest: 2 BHK to live in
- Budget: About ₹1.2 crore
- Finance: No loan pre-approval yet
- Possession: 2028 acceptable
- Decision-makers: Ms Rao and her husband
Example 3 · WhatsApp
What does the agent do when a parent is only asking about fees?
It answers from the institute's own fee sheet, finds out the child's class and timeline, and does not push. Because a message months from now needs an approved template, it asks the parent's permission before setting a reminder.
- Child's class: Class 9, CBSE
- City: Jaipur
- Interest: Foundation batch fees
- Timeline: Kota from class 11, June 2028
- Follow-up: WhatsApp reminder, April 2027 (opted in)
Questions to ask
What should the agent ask a lead in India?
You write these into the agent's prompt, in your own words and in your customers' language.
| Question | Why it matters here |
|---|---|
| Which language are you most comfortable in? | Leads answer more openly in their own language. The agent can open in Hindi or English and switch to Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali or any of the 22 scheduled languages when the person does, so a tier-2 city lead is not lost to an English-only script. |
| Who else decides, and will they be on the call? | Big purchases in India are often family decisions: a spouse, parents or a business partner. Learning this early tells you whether to book a visit now or a callback when everyone can be present. |
| Is the money ready, or does it depend on a loan? | For flats, vehicles and education, a bank sanction often decides the timeline. Ask whether the loan is pre-approved, applied for or not started, and what monthly instalment the person is comfortable with. |
| Do you have a date in mind, such as a festival, a result or an admission cycle? | Purchases cluster around Diwali, Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya, board results and admission windows. A date tells you whether the lead is hot this week or a reminder for next season. |
| Which area or pincode, and do you own the property? | Service areas, discom rules, RERA projects and delivery routes are all local. Owning versus renting decides whether solar, interiors or a loan is even possible. |
| Is this number right for calls and WhatsApp, and at what time? | It confirms the number, records the person's permission for the channel and tells you the hours that suit them, which you then keep inside your own campaign hours. |
Reading the outcome
Hot, warm or cold: what happens next.
The bands are the ones you describe in the prompt, then read off each call's outcome and transcript.
| Band | What it means | What you do next |
|---|---|---|
| Hot | Needs it soon, has the budget or loan, can name the decision-maker and accepted a visit or slot. Bands are what you write into the agent's prompt and read off the outcome; ThinnestAI has no built-in lead score. | A person calls or visits within your own service standard. Keep the booked slot and the captured fields in front of them. |
| Warm | Interested, but waiting on a family decision, a loan or a date. The agent set a callback or a visit for later. | Let the scheduled callback happen on time, with the right people present. Send one useful message, not a stream. |
| Cold | Only asking about price, too early, or asked not to be contacted. | Do not chase. Honour a request to stop by adding the number to your do-not-contact list, and keep a permitted reminder only if the person agreed to it. |
The rules
What the rules say about following up a lead in India.
Consent, do-not-call lists, calling hours and recording are set by local law, and you are responsible for them.
Calling hours, the DND register and 140-series numbers
India's Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018 (TCCCPR), made by TRAI, limit promotional calls and SMS to 09:00 to 21:00 IST; TRAI's own summary of the 2018 rules and carrier guidance both say so (read 25 October 2026). Recipients can block promotional calls through the DND register (NCPR), and TRAI says promotional calls must come from registered 140-series numbers (TRAI press release, July 2026, read 25 October 2026). The regulations were amended in December 2018 and on 12 February 2025. Whether a call a customer asked for counts as promotional depends on its content, so ask your adviser before you rely on an enquiry as permission. Read the official text; not legal advice.
What is yours, and what the platform does
Registering as a telemarketer or principal entity, and choosing the right number series, is your responsibility. The platform does not scrub numbers against DND or NCPR. It gives you calling hours you set for each campaign (set them to 09:00 to 21:00), a do-not-contact list you keep, a transcript and an outcome for every call, and recording as a per-agent switch that is off by default. Write who is calling, and that it is an automated assistant, into the greeting.
WhatsApp permission and personal data
Meta's WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy (read 25 October 2026) lets you message people only if you have received opt-in permission from them, and says you decide the method of opt-in. You must also honour stop requests. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Rules were notified on 13 November 2025; law-firm summaries put the notice-and-consent duties in a final phase about 18 months later, around May 2027 (read 25 October 2026; confirm against the Gazette). We did not verify whether any TRAI rule applies to WhatsApp messages, so ask your adviser. Not legal advice.

Local notes
What is different in India.
- Voice: Hindi, English and Hinglish code-switching work on one call, and all 22 scheduled Indian languages are available. For English, the voice library includes an Indian accent. WhatsApp and web chat replies also cover all 22.
- Channel: WhatsApp is the normal way small businesses and customers message each other in India, so a lead often starts there from an ad or a QR code. We found no reliable national figure to quote.
- Timing: many buyers are at work in the day, so offering an evening callback inside 21:00 often converts a refusal into a booked slot. Festival weeks and wedding season change when people answer, so set campaign days and holidays with that in mind.
- Numbers and billing: you can buy an Indian number from us or import your own from Plivo, Vobiz, Twilio or Telnyx. Billing is in rupees with GST invoices; the pricing page has the plans.
