Voice AI use cases in Indonesia
An AI phone agent answers a call in Bahasa Indonesia or English, books, takes a message or passes the call to a person, and writes a transcript and outcome for every call. These eight use cases come from businesses in Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Denpasar, Semarang and Tangerang, followed by what it cannot do here and the rules to check.
Eight use cases
How businesses in Indonesia use voice ai.
Fictional businesses in real places, to show what the agent does with calls.
01 — Villa rental · Canggu, Bali
Answering guests who call a villa at night
Guests ring from airports and taxis, from other time zones, while the manager is asleep or at a delivery. The agent answers in English or Indonesian from the house manual and the listing, and passes anything urgent to a person.
- Answers with the villa name and says it is an automated assistant.
- Gives directions, check-in details and house rules from the knowledge base.
- Takes a message for the manager, or books a viewing through Cal.com for a new enquiry.
- Transfers the call to the manager for safety problems or a lockout, if the number allows transfer.
The manager starts the morning with a list of messages and bookings instead of missed calls.
02 — Dental clinic · South Jakarta
Confirming appointments and rebooking cancellations
Empty chairs are expensive and the front desk cannot ring everyone. The agent calls patients who booked, a day ahead, confirms in Indonesian and offers another slot to anyone who cannot come.
- Calls patients from the appointment list within the hours you set, and says who is calling and why.
- Asks whether they can still attend, and offers open slots through Cal.com if not.
- Records the outcome: confirmed, moved or no answer, with a callback for no answer.
- Hands clinical questions to the front desk, and gives no medical advice.
The desk sees at a glance who confirmed and which slots have reopened.
03 — Freight forwarder · Surabaya
Calling consignees to arrange a delivery slot
A container or pallet cannot be delivered because nobody answers or the address is unclear. The agent rings the consignee, confirms the address and a time, and notes the outcome for the dispatcher.
- Calls each consignee on the day list, in Indonesian, identifying the company and the shipment.
- Confirms the address, a nearby landmark and a delivery time window.
- Schedules a callback if the consignee is not available, and detects voicemail where the number allows it.
- Passes disputes about charges or damage to the dispatcher.
The dispatcher plans routes from confirmed slots rather than from guesses.
04 — Tutoring centre · Medan
Calling back parents who asked for information
A parent fills in a web form for a trial class and expects a call. The agent calls within the hours you set, says who it is, asks about the child's grade and subjects, and accepts a not now.
- Opens by saying it is an automated assistant from the centre and offers to stop.
- Asks the grade, subjects and goal, and gives schedule and fee answers from your documents.
- Books a trial class through Cal.com, or schedules a callback when a second decision-maker is involved.
- Adds anyone who asks to stop to your do-not-contact list.
Staff call only the parents who are ready to enrol, with notes on what each wants.
05 — Airport transfers and car rental · Denpasar, Bali
Taking transfer and car-hire bookings by phone
Tourists and hotel front desks ring to book a driver, often with a flight number and a hotel name that must be written down exactly. The agent takes the details and reads them back before ending the call.
- Asks for pick-up point, destination, date, time, passengers and luggage.
- Reads the flight number and hotel name back letter by letter to avoid mistakes.
- Writes the booking into the call record and, through a signed webhook or the API, to your own dispatch system.
- Passes unusual requests, such as a driver for several days, to a person.
Dispatch gets complete bookings, in the right order, without re-listening to calls.
06 — Property developer · Tangerang, Banten
Screening enquiries from billboards and ads
A new housing cluster gets calls from people who saw a sign or an ad. The agent answers the standard questions, finds out who is serious, and books a visit to the show unit.
- Answers questions about unit types, location and facilities from your brochure and website.
- Asks about budget range, timing and payment route, including whether they plan a mortgage (KPR).
- Books a show-unit visit through Cal.com, or passes the caller to a sales person at once.
- Does not discuss legal title or financing terms beyond your approved text.
Sales staff spend their time on visitors who have a date and a budget.
07 — Car workshop · Semarang
Reminding customers that a service is due
A workshop wants customers back for scheduled servicing. The agent rings customers who agreed to reminders, offers a slot and records declines without pushing.
- Calls customers who opted in to service reminders, within the hours you set.
- Says which vehicle and which service, and offers a booking slot through Cal.com.
- Schedules a callback for those who ask to be called later, and stops for those who decline.
- Hands warranty or price disputes to the service manager.
The service bay fills from a list the workshop can read, not from walk-ins alone.
08 — Apartment building management · BSD City, Tangerang
Handling after-hours fault calls from residents
Residents ring about a water leak, a lift or a power cut at night, when the office is closed. The agent takes the unit and the fault, sorts urgent from routine and reaches the technician on call.
- Asks tower, unit number and the fault, and confirms them back.
- Treats water, fire and lift entrapment as urgent and transfers to the duty technician, if the number allows transfer.
- Logs routine faults for the morning team with a transcript.
- Tells the resident what will happen next and who will call.
Urgent faults reach a person quickly and routine ones are waiting in order at 08:00.
In practice
How voice ai is used in Indonesia.
- We found no reliable national figure for how Indonesian customers prefer to contact businesses, so we do not quote one. WhatsApp is the main business channel, so voice works best where people ring you: reservations, transfers, urgent faults and older customers.
- Voice agents speak Indonesian, Malay and English, and the English voices include an Indonesian accent as well as American, British and Australian ones. Pick a voice from the library by language, accent, gender and age, and listen before you choose.
- Indonesia has three time zones. Jakarta, Surabaya and Medan are on Western time, and Bali is one hour ahead; set campaign hours on the called person's clock.
- Test with callers from the regions you serve and with real names, street addresses and flight numbers. We publish no accuracy figure for Indonesian speech.
Plainly
What this will not do for you in Indonesia.
So you can rule it in or out before you start.
- Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese and other regional languages are not voice languages. Callers using them are best served by a person.
- We do not sell or rent Indonesian numbers. You connect a number from your own Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo account, or forward calls to one. Transfer to a person and voicemail detection work on Plivo and Telnyx numbers, not on an imported Twilio number.
- We support region deployments for enterprise customers.
- The platform does not screen numbers against any register and sets no calling window of its own. We do not suggest debt-collection calls here, because OJK regulates how financial firms contact customers.
The rules
The rules that apply in Indonesia.
The rules differ by country and change; you are responsible for following them where you operate.
Calls and personal data: Law 27/2022
Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection is in force and its transition ended on 17 October 2024. Article 20 lists the lawful bases for processing, starting with explicit, valid consent for specified purposes, and Article 21 requires you to tell people the basis and the purpose. A name, a phone number, an address and what a caller says are personal data, and health data is a specific category under Article 4. Government Regulation No. 33 of 2026 was promulgated on 16 July 2026 and takes effect on 16 January 2027; press reports in September 2026 said the data protection agency was not yet established. We read the law text on Wikisource and the regulation in an RSM Indonesia alert dated 18 September 2026, not the official texts. Read the official text; not legal advice.
Marketing calls and calling hours
For banks, lenders, insurers and similar firms, OJK's POJK 22/2023, in force from 22 December 2023, bars offering products through personal channels such as phone and SMS without consent; its predecessor, POJK 6/POJK.07/2022, also limited such offers to 08:00 to 18:00, Monday to Saturday, local time, and we have not confirmed that the limit carried over because OJK's site was unreachable. For ordinary businesses we did not find a national do-not-call register or a telemarketing rule from the communications ministry, which is not permission to cold-call. You keep your own do-not-contact list and set calling hours for each campaign. Read the official text; not legal advice.
Recording calls
The sources we read did not settle how Indonesian law treats recording a call you are part of. Recording is a per-agent switch and is off by default; if you turn it on, say so in the agent's opening line, state why, and ask counsel. Read the official text; not legal advice.
Read on 25 October 2026. Read the official text; this is not legal advice.
