Can an AI Answer Calls for Australian Plumbers, Electricians and HVAC Tradies?
Short answer: yes. An AI phone agent can answer while you are under a sink, on a roof or driving between jobs, ask the questions you would ask, log the job with the address and the fault, and put real emergencies through to whoever is on call. It should not quote complex work, diagnose a fault or give safety advice beyond a line you have written, such as telling the caller to ring 000 if anyone is in danger. Set up the emergency rules and the information you need per job first, then widen what it does.
Why do trades lose work to missed calls?
A customer with a leak, a tripped switchboard or a dead air conditioner in a heatwave rings the first number that looks right and keeps going down the list until someone picks up. If you are busy, the call goes to voicemail, and many people do not leave a message. The loss is not the call; it is the job, and sometimes the regular customer behind it. An answered call with a clear next step is what keeps the job.
What can the agent do for a tradie?
- Collect the job details. Name, mobile, address or suburb and postcode, the fault, access notes, whether anyone is home, and how urgent it is.
- Answer standard questions from your website: service areas, hours, whether you do commercial work, how call-out fees work if you publish them.
- Book a visit into a calendar through Cal.com or into your own system through its API, or log a request for you to confirm.
- Route emergencies. A gas smell, sparks, water running into a ceiling or a power failure at a medical practice can be set to transfer to the on-call phone straight away (transfer works on Plivo and Telnyx numbers; an imported Twilio number answers and records but cannot transfer).
- Send you the result. Every call has a transcript and an outcome, and the call result can go to your job-management software by webhook or API if it has one. We have not tested individual job-management products, so ask your supplier what it can receive.
What does a good call look like?
Here is a made-up call to an electrical business in Perth at 7.40pm.
- Agent: "Thanks for calling Westside Electrical. I'm an AI assistant and this call may be recorded. How can I help?"
- Caller: "Half the house has lost power and the safety switch won't reset."
- Agent: asks whether there is any burning smell, noise or water near the switchboard. If yes, it says to ring 000 and does not continue the job conversation. If no, it takes the address, a callback number and the time the power went off.
- Agent: "I'll pass this to the electrician on call and they'll ring you. Is 0400 000 000 the best number?"
- Outcome: urgent job logged, on-call electrician notified, transcript saved.
The safety questions are yours to write. We provide the agent and the tools; the wording of safety instructions should come from your own procedures.
What should it never do?
- Diagnose or tell a caller to try an electrical or gas fix. Keep it to a line you have approved, then hand over.
- Promise arrival times it cannot know. Offer a callback window or a booking from your real calendar.
- Quote unseen jobs. Quote only fixed-price services that you publish, and send the rest to a site visit or callback.
- Make up licence or insurance claims. Give it only the facts you want repeated.
How do I set it up for a trade business?
- Write down what you need to know for every job type: plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, gas.
- Put service areas, hours, fee rules and your emergency policy into the knowledge base.
- Set the emergency rule: which phrases or answers trigger a transfer, and to whom.
- Connect your number. Many tradies forward their mobile to the agent when busy or after hours.
- Review transcripts daily for a fortnight and tighten the instructions.
Are there Australian rules I should know about?
For answering inbound calls, the main ones are privacy and recording. If your turnover is three million dollars or less you may be outside the Privacy Act, but check, because the OAIC lists exceptions (read 25 October 2026). Recording laws differ by state: see recording rules by state. If you plan to ring past customers to sell services or maintenance plans, that is telemarketing and the Do Not Call Register Act 2006 and the ACMA calling-hours standard apply; see the Do Not Call Register and AI calls. This is general information, not legal advice.
