Saudi Arabia
Can an AI Phone Agent Answer Calls in Arabic for a Saudi Business?
Short answer: yes on the phone, no in WhatsApp chat. Voice agents speak Arabic and English, and you pick each voice from a searchable library and listen before you choose. We claim Arabic, not a regional dialect, because we have not confirmed how any voice handles Najdi, Hijazi or other ways of speaking. The agent's replies on WhatsApp and website chat are not available in Arabic, so keep a person on the Arabic side of your messaging.
What can the agent do on an Arabic call?
- Answer in Arabic or English and follow the caller if they switch. We have not measured mid-call switching, so test it.
- Book and move appointments in a calendar connected through Cal.com, or in your own system through its API.
- Answer questions about hours, branches, services and requirements from your website, files and pasted text. If the material is thin, the answers will be too.
- Take a message or lead and write it into the call record with a transcript and an outcome.
- Pass the call to a person on Plivo and Telnyx numbers. An imported Twilio number answers and records but cannot transfer.
What can't it do in Arabic?
| Need | Answer |
|---|---|
| Speak a named regional dialect | No promise. We claim Arabic only. |
| Reply in Arabic on WhatsApp or website chat | Not available. Chat replies run in 37 languages and Arabic is not one. |
| Send an Arabic WhatsApp template | Yes, a template you write and get approved can be in Arabic. It is a message you author, not an agent reply. |
| Give you a +966 number | No. You connect a number from your own Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo account. |
| Keep data in the Kingdom | Enterprise customers can ask for a deployment in their own region. |
Which other languages matter in Saudi businesses?
Many residents of the Kingdom speak Urdu, Hindi, Bengali or Filipino at home (stated here from general knowledge, not from a source read for this post). Voice agents speak all of those, as well as English with Indian, Philippine, British, American and other accents, so a front desk that gets calls from several communities can answer in more than one language. On chat, Urdu, Hindi and Bengali are among the 37 reply languages and Arabic is not. Choose the greeting to suit your callers: for a clinic, an Arabic opening with an offer to continue in English is a common shape.
How do you test an Arabic voice before relying on it?
- Listen in the library and shortlist two or three Arabic voices.
- Ring the agent from your browser and read ten real questions from your own inbox, including doctors' names, branch names, district names and car models in Arabic script.
- Hand the phone to someone from the region your customers come from and ask what sounded wrong. Names and numbers are the usual weak point.
- Read the transcripts of the first fifty real calls and correct the knowledge base wherever the agent got something wrong.
- Write a handover rule: if the caller seems confused or asks for a person, the agent offers to transfer or take a callback.
What should the greeting say?
Short, in the language you expect most callers to use, with the choice of the other language in the first sentence. Say who is answering, that it is an automated assistant, and, if you record calls, that the call is recorded. You write the opening line, so the disclosure is yours. If calls to you may carry health or financial details, tell the agent not to ask for what it does not need. The data section of the Saudi data-transfer post explains why.
Which Saudi businesses is it a good fit for?
- Clinics and dental practices that book by phone; urgent symptoms go to a person. See healthcare voice AI.
- Car dealerships and service centres taking test-drive and service bookings. See automotive voice AI.
- Property developers and agents qualifying viewing requests. See real estate voice AI.
- Restaurants and salons with bookings and opening-hours questions. See restaurants voice AI.
It is a poor fit if your callers expect a specific dialect and will hang up on anything else, or if your customers mostly use WhatsApp and expect an Arabic-speaking assistant there.
How do you start?
Read the Saudi Arabia page and the voice AI agent page, settle the data question with your adviser, connect a number from your own carrier account or forward calls to one, and ring it from your browser with a colleague who speaks Arabic as a first language. See also the AI receptionist page.
