Can an AI Receptionist Handle Calls for a Malta Hotel or Boat Charter in High Season?
Short answer: yes, for the routine calls. An AI voice agent can answer in English, Italian, German or French, take bookings and questions at any hour, and pass urgent calls to your phone. It suits hotels, guesthouses, dive centres, boat charters and restaurants in Malta and Gozo whose staff are busy during the season. It does not speak Maltese, and it is the wrong tool for a call that needs judgement, such as a complaint or a safety decision on the water.
Why do tourism calls get missed?
The people who answer the phone are also the people running the boat, cooking, cleaning rooms or standing at the till. A guest ringing from the airport, a family asking whether a boat leaves in the morning or a couple trying to book a table for tonight will usually try the next business if yours goes to voicemail. The calls are short and repetitive: availability, times, prices from your own list, directions, and what to bring. That is what an agent handles best.
What can the agent do for each kind of business?
| Business | The agent can | It should hand over |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel or guesthouse in Sliema or Valletta | Answer questions on rooms, breakfast, airport transfers and check-in, take a booking request, log late arrivals for reception | Complaints, billing disputes, medical problems |
| Dive centre in Gozo | Explain courses and boat times, ask for certification level and group size, hold places for the team to confirm | Medical questions, weather or safety calls |
| Boat charter in Msida or Mellieħa | Take dates, party size and route interests, book a call-back with the skipper | Cancellations in bad weather, damage or insurance questions |
| Restaurant in Valletta | Book tables, answer menu and allergen questions from your uploaded menu | Large groups, special events, allergic reactions |
Bookings go into a calendar connected through Cal.com, or into your own system through its API. Questions are answered from your website and documents, and every call has a transcript and an outcome.
Which languages can callers use?
Voice agents speak English, with British, Irish, American and other accents, Italian, German, French, Spanish, Russian and many more of the 50 voice languages. You pick each voice from a library and listen first. On WhatsApp and website chat, replies run in 37 languages, and English, Italian, German and French are among them. Maltese is not supported on the phone or on chat, so a caller who insists on Maltese needs a person; add a rule that offers a call-back or transfer. We have not published how each voice sounds with each accent, so ring your agent with a native speaker before the season starts.
What about the phone number?
You keep the number you have. Connect a number held on a Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo account you control, or forward calls from your Maltese operator to one. We do not sell Maltese numbers. The Malta Communications Authority's decision notice MCA/D/24-5278 (read 25 October 2026) required operators to block, from 1 November 2024, incoming international calls that show Maltese numbers in specific ranges. If your +356 number lives on a foreign carrier account, ask the carrier how calls placed from it are treated before you rely on it for outbound calls. Inbound calls to your number are a different matter.
What are the limits?
- The agent follows your instructions and material. If the price list is out of date, so are its answers.
- It cannot see your live room or boat availability unless it is connected to a calendar or your own system. Keep a manual rule: take the request and let the team confirm.
- Transfer to a person works on Plivo and Telnyx numbers, not on an imported Twilio number.
- Billing is in US dollars by card, not euros. See pricing.
- It is not a reservations system, a channel manager or a payment page.
How should you set it up for the season?
- List the twelve questions you answer most, and the calls that must reach a person at once.
- Put your website, price list, boat or room details and house rules into the knowledge base.
- Choose an English voice and, if your guests need it, an Italian or German voice.
- Forward calls to the agent when you are on the boat or in the kitchen, or after closing, first.
- Read the transcripts for the first fifty calls and fix what the agent got wrong.
The Malta page has the languages, number and data details together, the AI receptionist page shows the full product, and the live post on English-only call answering for Maltese businesses covers the Maltese-language question in depth. Restaurant owners can read restaurants voice AI.
