Can an AI Receptionist Work in Sri Lanka Without Sinhala?

Short answer: it depends on who rings you. Voice agents speak English and Tamil, and Sinhala is not supported, by voice or in WhatsApp and chat replies. So an AI receptionist suits businesses whose callers speak English or Tamil, such as hotels and tour operators with international guests, private clinics, exporters, international schools and Tamil-speaking businesses in the north and east. If most of your callers speak Sinhala, it is not the right fit today.

Why is Sinhala the question everyone asks?

Because Sinhala is the first language of most people in Sri Lanka, and a business that answers a Sinhala caller in English can lose them. We do not offer Sinhala in the 50 voice languages or the 37 chat languages, and we will not claim it, hint at it or promise a date. If you need Sinhala, write to hello@thinnest.ai and tell us what you would use it for.

Who is it a good fit for?

  • Hotels, guesthouses and boutique stays in Galle Fort, Ella, Kandy or Nuwara Eliya. Guests ring from abroad, in English, at hours when the front desk is closed.
  • Tour and transfer operators in Negombo, Kandy or Colombo, who take flight numbers, party sizes and pickup points all day.
  • Private clinics and channelling centres in Colombo where patients and families book in English.
  • Apparel and tea exporters in Colombo who answer buyers in other time zones.
  • Tamil-speaking businesses in Jaffna, Batticaloa or Trincomalee, where Tamil is the everyday language, and Colombo businesses with Tamil-speaking customers.

Who should wait?

A business whose callers are mostly Sinhala speakers: a neighbourhood shop, a local service line, a government-facing helpline. The agent would ask an English or Tamil question and many callers could not continue. We found no reliable figure for what share of callers to your business will want Sinhala, so look at your own call log before you decide. If you cannot tell, sit with a receptionist for a day and note the language of each call.

What can I do when a caller does not speak English or Tamil?

  • Transfer to a person. Set a transfer rule so that a caller who cannot continue goes to your team (transfer works on Plivo and Telnyx numbers, not on an imported Twilio number).
  • Take a name and number. Instruct the agent to ask for a name and number and say a person will ring back, then follow up in Sinhala yourself.
  • Route by number. Give English-speaking customers the agent's number and keep a separate Sinhala line staffed by your team.

None of these makes the agent speak Sinhala. They only stop a Sinhala caller meeting a dead end.

How good is the Tamil?

Voice agents speak Tamil, and WhatsApp and chat replies run in Tamil too. We claim the language, not a Sri Lankan or Indian accent of it. Listen in the voice library, ring the agent from the browser, and ask a native speaker from your own region to try it, without a script, before you connect your number. Read the transcripts in the first weeks and fix place names and personal names.

How do I check my own call log?

  1. Take a week of missed and answered calls, or sit next to whoever answers.
  2. Note the language of each call: Sinhala, Tamil, English or mixed.
  3. Note the reason for each call and whether it needed a person.
  4. If Sinhala is a large share, keep a person on the phone and use the agent only for the English and Tamil lines, or for after-hours messages in English.

Can I keep my Sri Lankan number?

If the number is on a Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo account you hold, yes. We do not sell Sri Lankan numbers, and we have not verified which Sri Lankan numbers those providers can hold or port in. The simplest start is forwarding your calls to a number you hold there, so you can test before moving anything. Telnyx also calls only the countries switched on in your outbound voice profile, so add Sri Lanka before making outbound calls.

Where is the data?

We support region deployments for enterprise customers. Calls are processed partly in other countries under transfer safeguards. Billing is in US dollars by card; the pricing page has the plans.

The Sri Lanka page has the languages, numbers and billing in one place, and the AI receptionist page explains how the agent is set up.
