How Can E-commerce Brands Recover Abandoned Carts With WhatsApp and Calls?
Short answer: have your store send an event when a cart is left, and let that event start a WhatsApp sequence — a reminder after a short wait, another a day later — that stops the moment the buyer orders, replies or opts out. Consent is checked again before every message, not just the first. For the carts worth a conversation, the same event can trigger an AI call in the buyer's language, and the agent answers whatever stopped them: delivery time, COD, size or returns.
First: who knows the cart was abandoned?
Your store does — not us. Only your checkout knows a session started and no order followed. So your store, or an app that calls the API for it, posts an event such as "cart abandoned" with the buyer's phone and the cart contents, and we send what you set up. That keeps it honest: nothing is sent unless your store says it happened.
How it works, step by step
- Set up the sequence. Write two or three approved WhatsApp templates — "You left the blue kurta in your cart", then a reminder, then a last nudge — and the wait between each.
- Your store posts the event. The events API enrols the buyer, with the cart details carried along so each message can name what they left.
- Each buyer is on their own clock. Someone who left a cart on Monday and someone who left one on Friday each get the sequence from their own start.
- Consent is checked at every send. If the buyer opted out between the first and second message, the second does not go.
- It stops when it should. A reply or an opt-out ends the sequence, and your store's "order placed" event can stop it too — so nobody gets a reminder for something they already bought.
- Replies reach an agent. When a buyer writes back — "does this come in XL?", "is COD available?" — the AI agent answers from your knowledge base and, on Shopify, can look up products and help them back to checkout. Anything it can't handle goes to your team in the shared inbox.
When a call is worth it
For high-value carts, or first-time buyers who chose COD, your store can place a call through the outbound call API. The agent rings in the buyer's language, asks if something went wrong — a failed payment, a delivery charge, a size question — and answers it. The outcome and transcript come back to your systems on a signed webhook. Calls stay inside 9am–9pm IST; busy lines are retried in minutes, and a buyer who declines is never re-dialled.
Rules to be careful about
- Cart reminders are marketing messages. Only message buyers who agreed to hear from you — the audience is consent-gated, and a one-word STOP is honoured before the agent ever runs.
- Keep a do-not-contact list for calls; anyone on it is never called again.
- The telemarketing rules and WhatsApp policies that apply to your business are your responsibility; keep the number of reminders modest.
- Write the opening of each call so the buyer knows which brand is calling and why.
What you need to start
