What Happens When an AI Agent Reaches Voicemail?

Short answer: without answering machine detection, an AI agent treats a voicemail greeting as a person and talks to a recording. With detection, it recognizes the machine and does what you chose: leave a short message after the beep, or hang up quietly, and in both cases mark the person as not reached and try again later inside your calling hours. On inbound calls the question flips: the AI agent is what callers reach instead of your voicemail.

Why does voicemail matter so much on outbound calls?

On many outbound lists, a large share of calls are picked up by a machine rather than a person. If those calls are handled badly, three things go wrong: the agent talks to a recording, your results count a machine as a conversation, and the person never learns why you called. Getting voicemail right is mostly about those three.

Leave a message or hang up?

What should an AI voicemail say?

  • Who is calling and why, in two sentences: "Hi, this is Lakeside Vets calling about Bella's vaccination reminder. We'll try you again, or call us back on this number."
  • No personal details. No balances, results, account numbers or anything you would not want a family member to hear.
  • A reason to call back. If the same agent answers your number, a call back can finish the job then and there.

Are there rules about AI voicemails?

Yes, and they follow the rules for the call itself. In the US, the FCC treats AI-generated voices as artificial voices under the TCPA, so a voicemail left in an AI voice is subject to the same consent rules as the call (see the TCPA and AI calls). In the UK, automated marketing calls need specific prior consent under PECR (see PECR and TPS). Elsewhere, check your local telemarketing rules. You are responsible for who you call and what you leave. This is not legal advice.

When should the agent try again?

A voicemail means the person was not reached, so it should count as "no answer", not as a completed call. Retry after a reasonable gap, at a different time of day, inside your calling hours, and stop after a small number of attempts. Never retry someone who declined the call or asked not to be called again.

Keep voicemails out of your connect rate

The phone network connects a voicemail the same way it connects a person. A report that counts both as "answered" overstates how many people you reached and how long you talked to them. Count voicemails on their own line, so connect rate and talk time describe conversations with people.

What about inbound calls?

For calls coming in, voicemail is usually the problem the AI agent solves. Instead of a caller hearing "leave a message after the tone" and hanging up, the agent answers, deals with the question or takes a structured message (name, number, reason), and schedules a callback. That message lands in your console as a transcript rather than an audio file you have to listen to. See answering calls after hours.

How it works in ThinnestAI

  • Write a message on the campaign and detection turns on for it; the message is left after the greeting, in the agent's language.
  • No message? The agent's "Hang up on voicemail" setting decides whether it ends the call when a machine answers.
  • Smart retry treats a voicemail as not reached and tries again after the wait you set, inside your calling hours; it never re-dials someone who declined. Anyone on your do-not-contact list is never called.
  • Results show voicemails separately from answered calls, outside the connect rate and talk time.
  • Which numbers: voicemail detection works on Plivo and Telnyx numbers and on numbers bought from us in India, not on imported Twilio numbers. You are told when you create a campaign that mixes them.

The step-by-step setup is in how a voice agent leaves a voicemail. Next step: voice campaigns.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI agent tell a voicemail from a person?

+
With answering machine detection, usually yes. Detection is not perfect, which is why a voicemail should be retried rather than treated as final.

Should an AI agent leave a voicemail on every attempt?

+
No. Leave one short message and retry the other attempts without one, or the same recording reaches the same person several times.

Is an AI-voiced voicemail legal?

+
It is subject to the same rules as the call. In the US the TCPA's artificial-voice rules apply; in the UK PECR applies to marketing. Check your own rules; this is not legal advice.

Does voicemail detection work on every number?

+
In ThinnestAI it works on Plivo and Telnyx numbers and on numbers bought from us in India, not on imported Twilio numbers.

Do voicemails count as connected calls?

+
They shouldn't. ThinnestAI shows them separately and leaves them out of the connect rate and talk time.
