How Do You Get the WhatsApp Business API in Indonesia, and What Does Meta Charge?
Short answer: an Indonesian business gets the WhatsApp Business API through a provider approved by Meta: you sign in with Facebook, pick a phone number dedicated to the API, and set up templates and the inbox on the provider's platform. Meta charges per delivered message, by message category and by the recipient's country calling code (+62 for Indonesia), and publishes a rate card for Indonesia that includes rupiah. We did not copy the figures here because they change; read them on Meta's page. Facts below are from Meta's pricing documentation, read on 25 October 2026.
How do you get access?
- Pick a number you can dedicate. Meta verifies the number during setup. On our platform, running the WhatsApp Business app and the API on the same number at the same time is not supported, so use a number you are happy to move to the API.
- Sign in with Facebook inside the platform. ThinnestAI is an approved Tech Provider, so setup is self-serve: sign in, choose or create your business account, pick the number. Everything after that, including templates, broadcasts and the inbox, happens in our platform.
- Set up templates. A template is a message you write and Meta reviews. You need one to message a customer first or after the 24-hour window has closed. See how to get WhatsApp templates approved. Templates can be written in Indonesian or Malay.
- Connect an agent. The same AI agent can then answer on WhatsApp, with your knowledge base, orders and calendar behind it. See WhatsApp Business API and the WhatsApp AI agent.
The green tick (official business account badge) is a separate review by Meta, and we cannot give a timeline for it. See how the green tick works.
How does Meta charge in 2026?
- Per message, since 1 July 2025. Meta's page says it charges per message, and conversation-based pricing is deprecated.
- By category and market. The rate depends on the message category and the recipient's country calling code. Indonesia (+62) is its own market on the rate card, not part of a regional rate. Meta does not charge for messages a user sends to a business.
- Only when delivered. You pay when a message is delivered, not when it is sent.
- Five categories. Marketing, utility, authentication, service, and, as of 1 July 2026, Meta Business Agent.
- Rupiah rate cards. Meta publishes rate cards as CSV and PDF downloads by currency, and lists IDR among the currencies. Meta's page says the cards reflect rates effective 1 October 2026. The currency is chosen when a business account is created and cannot be changed directly.
What counts as a category?
| Category | Typical Indonesian example |
|---|---|
| Marketing | A flash-sale announcement, a new collection, a back-in-stock offer |
| Utility | Order confirmation, shipping update, appointment reminder |
| Authentication | A one-time code (not offered through our platform) |
| Service | Your reply to a customer who has just written to you |
Meta decides the category of a template when it reviews it. Marketing has usually been priced above utility, so check the card, write utility messages as plain notifications and keep promotions out of them.
What about replies to customers?
When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens, and it resets with each new message from them. Inside it you can send ordinary replies without a template. Meta's page describes how those service messages are charged: until 30 September 2026 they were free; from 1 October 2026 every business phone number gets a free tier of 1,000 service messages a month, and Meta charges from the 1,001st. The same page says utility messages sent inside an open window became chargeable on 1 October 2026. Replies within a window opened by a Click to WhatsApp ad are not charged for the four standard categories, according to the same page.
Rules like these change, so open the page before you budget.
Where do you read the Indonesia figures?
Open Meta's pricing documentation for the WhatsApp Business Platform, find the rate card downloads for the IDR currency, and read the row for Indonesia. The page links a CSV of list rates, a CSV of volume tiers and a PDF. If you also message customers elsewhere, the other markets are in the same file. Our platform fee is separate from Meta's charges and is on the pricing page; we do not repeat either figure in articles because both change.
How do you keep the bill down?
- Answer within the window. A reply to a customer is a service message; a template sent after the window closes is charged by its category.
- Use the right category. An order update is a utility template, not marketing.
- Send marketing only to people who agreed. That is good practice and a rule of WhatsApp's policy. See WhatsApp opt-in rules. Broadcasts on our platform go only to people marked as having consented, and a one-word STOP is honoured.
- Read the delivery report. You pay for delivered messages, so a number that never receives your template should not cost you.
- Check your currency. If you want to be billed by Meta in rupiah, choose it when you create the business account.

What are the limits of our setup?
Our own billing is in US dollars by card, not in rupiah, and numbers are connected, not sold: we do not rent Indonesian numbers. Product catalogue and multi-product WhatsApp messages are not supported. Chats inside Tokopedia or Shopee are separate inboxes, and the agent does not read them.
Your next step
Open Meta's rate card for Indonesia, list the ten messages you send most, mark each as marketing, utility or service, and read the Indonesia page for the full setup. Then connect your number from the WhatsApp Business API page. The same agent can also answer your phone as an AI receptionist.
