Lead qualification · Sri Lanka
How an AI agent qualifies leads for businesses in Sri Lanka
An AI agent qualifies a lead by asking the questions you put in its prompt and saving the answers with a transcript and an outcome. It speaks English and Tamil, not Sinhala, so these three Sri Lanka examples are a boutique hotel in Galle, an apparel exporter in Colombo and a solar installer in Jaffna on WhatsApp in Tamil (shown in English).
Example 1 · Inbound call
Can the agent qualify a group booking enquiry from abroad?
A caller from London asked about a family stay. The agent took dates, party size and room needs, noted the dates were firm, and left a request for reception to confirm availability and rates in the morning.
- Party: 6 guests, 3 rooms, 2 extra beds
- Dates: 8 to 15 February, fixed
- Transfer: Colombo airport
- Dietary: One vegetarian
- Next step: Reception replies by email
Example 2 · Outbound follow-up call
Can the agent follow up an overseas buyer who asked for a call about samples?
A buyer in Manchester had asked on the exporter's site to be called about sampling. The agent called at a time that suited the buyer's clock, said who it was and why, found the buyer was not ready, and scheduled a callback in spring.
- Buyer: Small knitwear label, Manchester
- Quantity: About 300 per style
- Timing: Not before spring
- Consent: Asked for a call on the website
- Callback: March, 10:00 buyer time
Example 3 · WhatsApp
Can the agent qualify a rooftop solar enquiry in Tamil on WhatsApp?
The homeowner wrote in Tamil (shown here in English). The agent asked about the roof, ownership and monthly electricity bill, found a clear need, and booked a site visit for the engineer.
- Ownership: Owner
- Roof: Concrete, one storey
- Monthly bill: About LKR 18,000
- Language: Tamil
- Visit: Thursday morning
Questions to ask
What should the agent ask a lead in Sri Lanka?
You write these into the agent's prompt, in your own words and in your customers' language.
| Question | Why it matters here |
|---|---|
| Which language does the customer speak? | The agent speaks English and Tamil but not Sinhala. Ask early, and transfer to a person if the caller cannot continue. |
| Are the dates fixed, with flights or visas booked? | For hotels and tours, fixed dates separate a booking from browsing and tell reception how fast to reply. |
| How many guests or rooms? | Party size decides the rooms, the vehicle and whether the owner needs to quote by hand. |
| Is the buyer a small label or an established brand, and what quantity? | For exporters, order size and style count decide whether a merchandiser takes the lead now. |
| Do they own the property or rent it? | For a solar installer, ownership and roof type decide whether a visit makes sense. |
| When do they want to start? | Timing, such as spring for a sample or Thursday for a visit, sets the callback or the booking. |
| What is the best number and time to reach them? | For overseas buyers it must be on their clock; for local homeowners, outside work hours. |
Reading the outcome
Hot, warm or cold: what happens next.
The bands are the ones you describe in the prompt, then read off each call's outcome and transcript.
| Band | What it means | What you do next |
|---|---|---|
| Hot | Clear need, dates or quantities and a decision-maker available. You write these rules into the agent prompt; the platform has no built-in scoring. | Book the visit or hand the lead to the right person at once, with the transcript. |
| Warm | Real interest but timing or details not settled. | Schedule a callback on the date they gave and send what they asked for. |
| Cold | Browsing, no timing, wrong fit, or a caller the agent cannot serve in English or Tamil. | Answer, send information and stop; or have a person ring back in Sinhala. |
The rules
What the rules say about following up a lead in Sri Lanka.
Consent, do-not-call lists, calling hours and recording are set by local law, and you are responsible for them.
Following up a lead by phone
On 25 October 2026 we could not confirm from an official source a Sri Lankan do-not-call register or a telemarketing calling-hours rule. One January 2020 industry report says the telecoms regulator (TRCSL) directed mobile operators to put a free opt-out in promotional text messages; we could not confirm it still applies or covers calls. So we state no rule. The platform sets no calling window: set the hours per campaign on the called person's clock, call only people who asked to hear from you, and ask your adviser and TRCSL before any cold campaign. Read the official text; not legal advice.
Personal data
As reported on 10 August 2026, Extraordinary Gazette No. 2498/16 of 22 July 2026 sets 1 January 2027 for sections 2 and 3 of the Personal Data Protection Act, No. 9 of 2022, and for Parts I and III (lawful processing, and the duties of controllers and processors, including rules on sending data abroad). A law-firm note of 5 September 2026 says data-subject rights and enforcement are not in that order. Collect only what you need, and say in the greeting how it will be used. Read the Gazette; not legal advice.
WhatsApp opt-in and recording
Meta's WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy (last updated 23 September 2026) says you may message only people who gave you their number and opted in, and that you must respect opt-outs. A customer who messages you first has started a conversation; a promotion to past customers needs opt-in. Recording is off by default; we found no verified Sri Lankan recording rule, so tell callers in the greeting if you record. Read the official text; not legal advice.

Local notes
What is different in Sri Lanka.
- Voice agents speak English and Tamil. Sinhala is not supported by voice or chat, and we promise no date. Set a transfer to a person, or a callback, for callers who cannot continue.
- WhatsApp and chat replies run in 37 languages: English and Tamil are among them. We found no reliable national figure for WhatsApp use in Sri Lanka, so check your own enquiries.
- International workspaces import a number from Twilio, Telnyx or Plivo; we do not sell +94 numbers and have not verified which Sri Lankan numbers those providers hold.
- We support region deployments for enterprise customers. Billing is in US dollars by card.
