How Do You Choose an AI Voice Agent Provider for India?
Short answer: choose an Indian AI voice agent provider by testing it on real calls in the languages your customers speak, not on a demo. Then check five India-specific things: whether you can get or bring an Indian number, how it handles promotional calls and the 140 series, whether you can set calling hours on the called person's clock to stay inside TRAI's window, whether you are billed in rupees with GST invoices, and where your data is stored. Finally, ask exactly what the per-minute price includes.
Why India needs its own checklist
A provider built for the US can sound fine in English and fall apart when a caller in Pune switches between Marathi, Hindi and English in one sentence. Indian numbers, TRAI's commercial calling rules and rupee billing with GST are also things a global platform may not handle. Test for India directly.
What should you check?
| Check | What good looks like | How to test it |
|---|---|---|
| Indian languages | Your customers' languages, in native script for chat, with Hinglish code-switching | Ten calls per language from staff who speak it natively |
| Indian numbers | Buy a number in the console, or import one you already have | Ask which carriers can be imported |
| Promotional calls | The product knows a number's purpose and blocks promotional campaigns on service numbers | Ask what happens if you launch a promotional campaign from a service number |
| Calling hours | Campaign hours you set on the called person's clock, plus weekday and holiday rules | Set a campaign's hours and check when the calls actually went out |
| Billing | Rupees, GST invoices, UPI and cards | Ask for a sample invoice |
| Data | Stored in India, with a clear answer on processing | Ask where it is stored and where it is processed |
| Price | One rate that includes the line, speech, the model and the voice | Ask for a full bill for a sample month |
How do you test Indian languages properly?
- List the languages your customers actually use, by region, not the languages you assume.
- Write ten real questions in each, including product names, amounts and addresses.
- Have native speakers ring the agent from ordinary mobiles, in normal places, not a quiet office.
- Include code-switching: Hinglish, and English words inside Tamil or Bengali sentences.
- Read the transcripts. Did it catch names, numbers and dates correctly?
ThinnestAI covers all 22 scheduled Indian languages plus English, with Hinglish code-switching, on calls and in written replies on WhatsApp and chat. One knowledge base serves every language. See Indian languages for the list.
What rules apply to outbound calls in India?
- Calling hours. TRAI's rules limit commercial calls to 9am to 9pm. In the product you set each campaign's calling hours on the called person's clock, so set them inside that window; you can also restrict weekdays and skip holidays.
- The 140 series. Promotional calls belong on 140-series numbers. The product knows an Indian number carries a purpose and refuses promotional campaigns on service-licensed numbers.
- Registration is yours. Telemarketer and DLT registration are the business's responsibility, not the platform's.
- Do-not-contact. The product keeps a do-not-contact list you maintain; it does not scrub against the national DND registry, so check your lists before you upload them.
What about numbers?
India workspaces can buy an Indian number in the console, or import one from Plivo, Vobiz, Twilio or Telnyx. One agent can call out from numbers on several providers and use a different one per call. Number pooling spreads outbound calls across a set of numbers so no single one is overused.
What about data and the DPDP Act?
India workspaces are stored in Mumbai. Stored is not the same as processed: parts of a conversation may be processed outside India by the services that recognise speech and write replies. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 applies to your customers' data; its Rules were notified on 14 November 2025, and most obligations take effect from 13 May 2027. As the business, you are responsible for notice and consent to your customers. The product gives you tools such as a do-not-contact list and a per-agent recording switch that is off by default.
What should you ask about price?
- Does the per-minute rate include the phone line, speech recognition, the language model and the voice, or are some passed through separately?
- Is there a surcharge for Indian languages?
- How are calls rounded: by the second, by a pulse, or by the whole minute?
- Are prices before or after GST?
- What does an Indian number cost each month?

When might another provider suit you better?
If your engineering team wants to assemble its own speech and model stack in code and only needs the call plumbing, a developer-first platform may fit better; our comparisons with Vapi and Retell set out the differences for India. If you only need a WhatsApp broadcast tool with no voice, a messaging-only platform may be simpler.
