How Do E-commerce Brands Use a WhatsApp Chatbot?

Short answer: online stores use a WhatsApp chatbot, better described today as an AI agent, to answer product and delivery questions at any hour, tell customers where their order is, remind opted-in shoppers about carts they left, collect delivery details in a form inside the chat, and pass returns and complaints to a person. Order and shipping updates go out as utility templates; promotions go only to customers who opted in.

Which jobs does it actually do?

JobWhat the agent doesWhat it needs
Product questionsAnswers sizing, materials, stock and shipping questions from your own informationYour website, policies and product files in the knowledge base; on Shopify, live product lookups
"Where is my order?"Looks up the order and replies with its status and trackingShopify order access, or your own order API through tool calling
Cart remindersSends a short sequence that stops when the shopper buys, replies or opts outAn event from your store, approved templates, opt-in

1. Answering product questions before the sale

Most pre-sale questions repeat: does it run small, is it machine washable, when will it arrive in Manchester, do you ship to Abu Dhabi. The agent answers from your knowledge base, built from a crawl of your website, your policies, and files such as a product spreadsheet, where each product's details stay together. On Shopify, it can look up products live and help the shopper back to checkout. Questions it cannot answer are logged, so you know what to add.

2. "Where is my order?"

The question every support team answers most. With Shopify connected, the agent reads the order status and tracking and replies in the chat. If you run another platform, connect your order API through tool calling. Ask the customer for the order number and the email or phone it was placed with, so you never read out one customer's order to another.

3. Reminding shoppers about abandoned carts

Your store knows when a cart is left; it posts an event, and the event starts a short WhatsApp sequence. Each shopper is on their own clock, consent is re-checked before every message, and the sequence stops when they buy, reply or opt out. Cart reminders are marketing, so they go only to opted-in shoppers. The full setup is in abandoned cart recovery on WhatsApp.

Selling to the US? Meta's documentation says it does not currently deliver marketing templates to WhatsApp users with US numbers (read 24 October 2026). Plan US cart recovery around other channels and around conversations shoppers start.

4. Getting the delivery address right

Free-text addresses arrive incomplete. A WhatsApp form, which Meta calls a Flow, lets the customer fill in each field in a native form inside the chat, and the answers come back to the agent and your team. See collecting delivery addresses inside WhatsApp and WhatsApp forms.

5. Returns, refunds and angry customers

This is where a bot should do less. Let the agent gather the order number, the item and the reason, then hand the chat to a person in the shared inbox; once your team takes over, the agent stays quiet. Meta's policy also requires a clear route to a human when you automate replies.

6. Post-purchase updates

Order confirmations, dispatch notices and delivery updates are utility messages when they are about the customer's own order with nothing promotional added. Your store sends them through the messaging API or an event-triggered sequence. Add a discount code and Meta treats the template as marketing, with marketing's price and rules.

What a WhatsApp agent will not do for you

  • ThinnestAI does not send WhatsApp product catalogue or multi-product messages. Products are discussed in the chat and bought on your store.
  • It does not decide refunds. Keep money decisions with your team.
  • It will not fix a list nobody opted in to. Unwanted promotions get your number restricted.

The same agent on other channels

The agent that answers WhatsApp can also answer your website chat and your phone line, with one memory of each customer, so the shopper who asked about sizes in chat is recognised when they call about delivery. Voice agents speak 50 languages; chat replies cover 37.

What you need to start

A WhatsApp Business number, your store's information for the knowledge base, a Shopify connection or order API, and a few approved templates. See the e-commerce page, the WhatsApp AI agent and pricing.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a WhatsApp chatbot track Shopify orders?

+
Yes. With Shopify connected, the agent reads order status and tracking and replies in the chat. Other platforms can be connected through their API.

Can I send WhatsApp product catalogues with ThinnestAI?

+
No. Catalogue and multi-product messages are not offered. The agent answers product questions and can help the shopper back to your store's checkout.

Are order confirmations marketing or utility messages?

+
Utility, when they are about the customer's own order and contain nothing promotional. Adding an offer makes the template marketing.

Can a chatbot handle returns?

+
It can collect the order number, item and reason, then hand the conversation to your team in a shared inbox. Keep refund decisions with people.

Do abandoned cart messages need opt-in?

+
Yes. Cart reminders are marketing messages, so send them only to shoppers who agreed to hear from you.
